4 Biggest Myths About Learning The Chinese Language

4 Biggest Myths About Learning The Chinese Language

    Mandarin Course Singapore

Mastering any foreign language isn’t easy. From having to learn new words to add to your vocabulary, to understanding proper grammar and structure – it’s similar to being sent back to your early years when you were just starting to learn how to read and write.

For most people though, learning the Chinese language is on a totally different level.

This is due to the fact that Chinese is a foreign language for most people. Taking in the characters and words, not to mention the grammar and structure, can seem like an impossible task unless you dedicate years to it.

While it is indeed true that learning the Chinese language is challenging, it is not as difficult as most people make it out to be.

You will soon learn that it’s difficulty isn’t the only myth surrounding the language.

Biggest Myth #1 – You need to learn thousands of Chinese characters in order to attain fluency.

Much of the difficulty of learning Chinese is attached to how many characters learners supposedly have to familiarize themselves with to become fluent in the language.

    That is not true.

Out of the thousands of Mandarin characters, you only need to learn a fraction of it.

If you master 300 characters, you can get by with the most basic communication in Chinese and can form as many as 64% of all written Chinese.

Double that to 600, and you’ll be able to form 80% of all written Chinese, which is more than enough to get you by, even when you’re looking for educational or employment opportunities in China.

Biggest Myth #2 – You need to practice with native speakers in order to get good.

While it helps, this is not entirely true.

There are plenty of fluent Chinese speakers who have learned the language without the help of native speakers.

From music videos to dramas and other forms of media, there are plenty of resources available for you to listen to the Chinese speak in their native language these days. Although you’ll benefit from practicing with Native speakers, it’s not necessary by any means.

Biggest Myth #3 – You need to memorize all of the Characters.

Because you’ll need to learn hundreds of characters to be fluent in Mandarin, many believe that it’s necessary to memorize all of them.

    That is also not true.

Good memory is not a must-have when learning Chinese. Instead, it is fully immersing yourself in the language that helps with mastery. In fact, joining a Mandarin course can give you the confidence needed to help you do so!

Biggest Myth #4 – Learning Chinese takes years of practice.

    No. It doesn’t.

If you want to learn Chinese, you can be fluent in a matter of months. It’s just a matter of how much time you dedicate to learning the language, as well as how effective your methods are.

Of course, if you want to reach native fluency in the Chinese language, it will take longer; however, you won’t feel it as much once you have got on with the basics and fully immerse yourself in the Chinese culture.

To begin and kick-start your Chinese language learning journey, you need to take action now – start by enrolling yourself in a Mandarin course in Singapore!
