How long would it take to learn the Chinese language?

This is perhaps one of the most common questions that every learner aspiring to learn the Chinese language might ask his/her instructor or from the people who already got command over the language.

The simple answer to this basic question is – it depends! It depends on the level of effort that you are willing to put into it. While some sites or books will tell you that you can learn to speak Chinese fluently in a week or so, it is still tough for you to learn a new language completely.

When it comes to learning Chinese, you would have two options; whether to learn Cantonese or Mandarin. Mandarin is more widely spoken version of Chinese language than the Cantonese. They have different pronunciation style but the writing part is almost similar.

Below, we have put together a list of factors you should note when learning the Chinese language.

The Amount Of Time You Are Willing To Put In

Just like any other language, it does take time to familiarize yourself to the grammar and sound of the Chinese language.

In spite of that, if you work at it for at least say one or two hours a day then it would be very possible for you to make smaller and simpler conversation after about three to six months. You might be able to grasp the basic language structure and eloquence in the Chinese language within a year to two years, provided that you work consistently.

After that, you can essentially express yourself and say what you want to say although you might be far from perfect and there may be a lot of words that you don’t know even after two years.

After two years of learning, you would be able to move onto more advanced vocabulary that you might not use on a daily basis. Followed by enhancing your listening skills, improving your phonetics and progressing on the vocabulary. As already stated, if you work consistently, you will be able to gain natural fluency in the Chinese language after a few years.

Learning Consistently Is Key

Always keep in mind that Chinese is a very rich language and you cannot stop learning that language at any stage. But don’t get demotivated by this because you can easily learn the basic language which is required during travelling or making small conversation.

For basic language learning, remember the 20-hour rule; which states that you can learn anything if you give it 20 hours of focused study. The most significant factor is to keep up your studies and never lose focus. If you are looking to get more technical knowledge and gain Masters level proficiency in the Chinese language, you would undoubtedly need to invest more time and efforts.

Naturally, the best way to learn the language is by living in China with native speakers. However, it is hard for almost anyone to do that.

Instead, you can take initiative to join some good academy in Singapore and start learning this wonderful language. Many flexible options are available in Singapore where you can learn the Chinese language in accordance with your budget and learning style. Proficiency takes years, but there’s always a start to everything, same goes to the very basics of the Chinese language.
