Why the Elite are Enrolling Their Children in Mandarin Classes

Why the Elite are Enrolling Their Children in Mandarin Classes

learn chinese language singapore

The secret is out. More and more parents are starting to think forward and see the benefits of having their children learn the language of the most populous country in the world, who also has the second-largest economy.

From private schools offering a Chinese language course to enrolling their children in overseas immersion programs, private tutors, and so on, the option to have toddlers learn the Chinese language is growing day by day and it’s showing no signs of stopping.

Then again, you can’t blame the market for trying to keep up with the growing demand from parents to teach their kids Mandarin.

China Is On the Up-and-Up

The main reason why more and more parents, especially the elite, believe in teaching their children Chinese is due to how big China has become in recent years. To say that it has become a major player in the global economy is an understatement; it is perhaps the biggest player of them all. China could probably pull away now and go back to reclusion, and it will survive. The rest of the world probably won’t, given how much we have depended on China.

For this very reason, many ambitious businessmen and elite are jumping on the bandwagon and teaching their kids to learn the language of the “growing powerhouse”.

This is similar to what happened in the 80s with the Japanese language and a decade later with learning German. But, while those ventures may not have paid off as much as the then-parents would like, trying to learn the Chinese language in Singapore is different because of how big China is and how much bigger it will only continue to grow in the years to come.

Of course, only time will tell if Chinese as a language will fade away, but for now, given China’s economic growth, it’s only prudent to teach your child Chinese if you have the means.

Why Children?

This should be pretty self-explanatory.

Children, as naïve and young as they may be, are like sponges who are quick to absorb anything you teach them. In the same time that an adult learns a new language, a child can probably learn two different languages, or even more. They learn at a much faster rate, and considering that language is something that’s ingrained in your brain, starting young is the best way to go.

Not only that, but the ability to speak multiple languages has been proven to have a lot of benefits.

For starters, bilingual speakers are excellent multitaskers, generally smarter compared to their monolingual peers, are more perceptive, has better memory, as well as better decision-making skills, among many other things.

So, as you can see, the decision of the elite to have their children learn Mandarin in Singapore is predicated on two things. First, is the economic progression of China. Second, it’s because the elite have always placed a value in finding ways for their children to get ahead in life, and it just so happens that China is the preferred language of choice to learn these days.
